Is there any requirement of Second opinion in Physiotherapy practice

Second opinion in Physiotherapy practice?

Definition:  Second opinion is the seeking of another medical (professional including same field) opinion to verify or validate what the first doctor had diagnosed or advised to the patient.
Second opinion is important in all medical  branches

Second opinion is often  proved a valuable step in healthcare delivery so we as a physiotherapists should not hesitate in this. For example if you advise your patient that you have GB syndrome or muscular dystrophy or ligament tear which need  expansive laser procedure he and his family may like to verify the test results, explore if there are other management options, weigh the pros and cons, and particularly in our country, see if they can get the treatment at more affordable rates, before they decide to start.

The diagnosis of Spinal stenosis, Herniated disc, Sciatica are another such situations. It often comes as a shock and evokes a sense of disbelief and denial in patients with thoughts like “it just can’t be true, I just had symptoms of back pain” or “it cannot be happening to me”.
A second evaluation by a competent doctor re-confirming the diagnosis helps the patient to accept the unpleasant truth. Thus it is very much important.

Good physiotherapists often advise their patients to consult a physician or orthopedics so as to get convinced of the unpleasant diagnosis and then return with greater motivation to embark on a treatment that is challenging.

Although, Our physiotherapists and physician are not that much good they behave badly and irresponsibly in cases of second opinion: most end up contradicting the previous one with an attitude of one-showmanship, change the treatment protocols in a fresh prescription, and try to win over and grab the patient rather than sending him back to the first one. this will lead the patient in to more confusion.

The line that divides second opinion from doctor shopping is however a thin and blurred one.

Doctor shopping is quite similar to what we do while buying vegetables and groceries, going from one grocer to another inquiring the rates of vegetables, seeing their shapes, size, color, and at times bargaining, before making our final purchase.

There are people who in their bad habit of seeking the cheapest, they will inquire about the cost of laser therapy in 5 different physiotherapy centers before going in for one.
It may not always be the price, but the popularity of the Physiotherapist or the market-stature of the clinic instead which could be the choice determinant.
Now a days patients have multiple options so they can choose their best.So as a physical therapists we should also not put our steps back to take second opinion in order to provide the best treatment.
