How to migrate to USA as a physical therapist

We all studies from good physiotherapy colleges and universities so it is obvious that we deserve a good life. We need good resources to live and recognition in society so most of us headed towards USA. It is not that much easy to work in USA, as requirements to practice physiotherapy in USA is very different as compare to other countries. If you want to make your dream true to work in USA as a physical therapist you have to go through given below steps. 



STEP 1:  Practice Licence
Practice Licence in USA is provided by state in which you wish to practice. There is no policy like national physical therapist licence, you have to choose one state in which you wish to work than apply for the licence.
Different states have different licencing authorities which have different criteria  to which you have to clear before practice. There are also a variation between the scope of the physiotherapist in states like you can practice dry needling in some states but not in New York So you have to fulfill different requirements to work for different states..
Although state rules are very similar but they are not identical. 
There are important notable differences.

You will need a healthcare worker certificate depending upon the type of visa you are seeking. The requirements for a physical therapist seeking a healthcare worker certificate include:

Gather information about your would be state’s license process. The best point of contact is the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy’s website.
Apply as a new applicant. 

Requirements for US physical therapy practice

1. Complete an application.
2. Receive verification of substantial equivalency to US first professional degree in physical therapy or state requirements.
3. Receive authorization to test for the National Physical Therapy Examination (NPTE).
4. Most important pass the NPTE this is the golden pass to USA.




Some states may also require:

1. Verification of eligibility to practice in country of education.
2. TOFEL (English knoweledge).
3. A period of board-approved, supervised practice may also be there sometime before or after the licencing.
4. A United States Social Security Number. (SSN)
5. Background verification check.

Step 2. Credentialing Process
Find a credentialing agency like FCCPT that meets your needs and is accepted by the state in which you wish to practice. The FCCPT  can assist you in this endeavor to meet the requirements of license and/or immigration.
FCCPT is a credentialing agency that authenticates and verifies all educational and regulatory documents. FCCPT also provides educational credential reviews for jurisdictional licensure and CMS provider requirements.

1. FCCPT has been authorized by USCIS to issue the healthcare worker certificate.
2.. FCCPT does not evaluate or equate work experience.

Please note: Credentialing does not include review of continuing education taught outside of the college or university system.

 The FCCPT offers a service called the Planned Learning and Assistance Network (PLAN). This service helps you interpret your report, and develops options for you to choose from to meet the requirements for equivalency.

Important change to USCIS Requirements for Health Care Worker Certification 
USCIS now requires the following to obtain a Type I Health Care Worker Certificate: 
1. Master’s degree or higher in Physical Therapy, and 
2. 202.1 semester credits minimum 
In response to USCIS' requirements, FCCPT has implemented the following requirements on the Comprehensive Credentials Review (Type 1 Review) Service: 
New Type I Review applications received on or after September 15, 2016 Must possess a Master's Degree or higher in Physical Therapy. 
If you submit an application and your degree title is a Bachelors degree, your service will be cancelled and your application fee will be refunded. 

Step 3. Immigration
 Immigration is a very important step to understand first of all clearly understand the type of visa or immigration process you will fall under in order to work in USA. 

The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) website (www.uscis.gov) provides insight into the requirements for immigration. 

foreign national will need a visa that allows them to work in the US as a non-US citizen.
Important things:
Keep your  healthcare worker certificate ready.
Passage of the TOEFL examinations is necessary to migrate in US.
Before immigration and issuance of VISA you need to ensure a sponsor and an employer.
Your personal appearance at the US embassy is also required at the fixed dates.

Second opinion in Physiotherapy practice?

Definition:  Second opinion is the seeking of another medical (professional including same field) opinion to verify or validate what the first doctor had diagnosed or advised to the patient.
Second opinion is important in all medical  branches

Second opinion is often  proved a valuable step in healthcare delivery so we as a physiotherapists should not hesitate in this. For example if you advise your patient that you have GB syndrome or muscular dystrophy or ligament tear which need  expansive laser procedure he and his family may like to verify the test results, explore if there are other management options, weigh the pros and cons, and particularly in our country, see if they can get the treatment at more affordable rates, before they decide to start.

The diagnosis of Spinal stenosis, Herniated disc, Sciatica are another such situations. It often comes as a shock and evokes a sense of disbelief and denial in patients with thoughts like “it just can’t be true, I just had symptoms of back pain” or “it cannot be happening to me”. 
A second evaluation by a competent doctor re-confirming the diagnosis helps the patient to accept the unpleasant truth.Thus it is very much important.




Good physiotherapists often advise their patients to consult a physician or orthopedics so as to get convinced of the unpleasant diagnosis and then return with greater motivation to embark on a treatment that is challenging.

Although, Our physiotherapists and physician are not that much good they behave badly and irresponsibly in cases of second opinion: most end up contradicting the previous one with an attitude of one-showmanship, change the treatment protocols in a fresh prescription, and try to win over and grab the patient rather than sending him back to the first one. this will lead the patient in to more confusion.

The line that divides second opinion from doctor shopping is however a thin and blurred one.

Doctor shopping is quite similar to what we do while buying vegetables and groceries, going from one grocer to another inquiring the rates of vegetables, seeing their shapes, size, color, and at times bargaining, before making our final purchase. 


There are people who in their bad habit of seeking the cheapest, they will inquire about the cost of laser therapy in 5 different physiotherapy centers before going in for one. 
It may not always be the price, but the popularity of the Physiotherapist or the market-stature of the clinic instead which could be the choice determinant.
Now a days patients have multiple options so they can choose their best.So as a physical therapists we should also not put our steps back to take second opinion in order to provide the best treatment.

Bachelor of Physiotherapy courses are offered by various universities in India. In order to achieve world class quality the BPT courses are designed to meet the international standards and is recognized by the IAP (Indian association of physiotherapists) and accepted by regulatory bodies like WCPT in abroad.
The courses should be taught by qualified faculty and has a balanced exposure of both academic and clinical training to students. 

The recognized undergraduate program is for four years plus a half year compulsory rotatory internship with a well-organized curriculum.

Duration of BPT Course:

Eligibility for admission in Bachelor of Physiotherapy:

Candidates over 17 years of age are eligible to apply. The candidate must have passed 10+2, A Level, IB, American 12th Grade or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry, English and Biology with a minimum of 50% marks taken together in Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

Please Note: Candidates can apply both under General and Foreign/NRI categories.


Indian nationals can apply for general and reserved seats but and Foreign/NRI categories are also there in all of the colleges.


Admission procedure:
There is no Entrance Test for this course in most of the universities only your percentage is enough to get you admission through Merit List.
Some gold standard institutes and Universities do conducts entrance test for admissions.


How the Merit List prepared:
Based on the marks obtained in Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Mathematics at 10+2, respective University will declare a list of candidates in the order of merit in their website. Candidates with Mathematics as subject in10+2 will be given separate rank based on PCM marks in the merit list. In case of two or more candidates obtaining equal marks in the merit list, the inter-se merit of such candidate will be determined respectively on the basis of English marks and total marks at the qualifying examination.
