Types of oxigen masks

Oxigen masks are use to deliver oxigen to hypoxic patients. These are available in wide range of quality and prices as per use.

Oxigen therapy is delivered through tap installed on board above the head of the patient. It is delivered in ambulance hospital

And ICU for patients in distress.

Indications of inadequate oxygenation include dyspnea (difficulty in breathing), cyanosis (blue Ness), tachypnea ( fast breathing), accessory muscle work, tachycardia ( fast heart beat) and high BP/ hypertension.

oxygen can be poisonous if percentages are delivered greater than 60% and in some cases, may diminish ventilator drive and create life threatening hypercarbia( increase in carbon dioxide).

The oxigen flow rate can be set on the wall tap, it varies from 0 – 15L per minute according to the need .

Nasal cannulae
Deliver 24-30% oxygen
Flow rate 1-4L/min (4L will dry the nose, 2L is more comfortable)
Used in non-acute situations or if only mildly hypoxic (e.g. saturations stable at 92% in a patient without lung disease
Simple mask and Reservoir systems:
Simple mask also known as Hudson mask. They are simply design for inhale and commonly used.

Reservoir systems can gather and store  concentrated oxygen during inspiration and exhalation.
If patient's minute ventilation flow exceeds the device delivery flow they can draw from the reservoir (poly pack like structure) anytime.
To increase the oxygen concentration delivered, often a mask reservoir is utilised.

The volume of the oxygen face mask high concentration is approximately 100-300 cm3 depending on size. It can deliver O2 of 40-60% at 5-10 liters.

Venturi Oxygen mask or Aerosol Mask – High-flow oxigen delivery.

Venturi mask can create high-flow enriched oxygen of a desired concentration as it mixes oxygen with room air.
It produces an accurate and constant O2.The oxygen concentration level are typically set at 24, 28, 31, 35 and 40% respectively.

The venturi mask is often employed when the doctor has a concern about CO2 retention or when respiration is inconsistent.
Venturi

This mask is often used in the COPD patients where the risk of knocking out the patient’s hypoxicity is of concern.
